That question was at the center of FRONTLINE’s 2012 documentary “Dropout Nation.” At the time, hundreds of thousands of teenagers in the United States were quitting high school without diplomas. The massive dropout rates hindered individual career prospects and clouded the country’s future. Sharpstown High School in Houston, Texas, which had earned a reputation as a “dropout factory,” launched a high-stakes experiment to address this problem. FRONTLINE spent a semester immersed in Sharpstown High exploring the challenges students faced trying to stay in school and the struggles educators encountered to keep them there. A troubling and inspiring journey, “Dropout Nation” investigated the causes, challenges and potential solutions of a national emergency. “Dropout Nation” was written and produced by Frank Koughan. It was produced by Kevin Vargas. The co-producer was Lisa Kalikow. The executive producer of FRONTLINE was David Fanning.
